Blue Lagoon Malta: How to Beat the June Crowds

The Blue Lagoon on Comino Island is probably the exact image you have in mind when you picture your Malta summer holiday. The water is an unreal, crystal-clear turquoise, the pale limestone rocks are stunning, and it is easily one of the most beautiful swimming spots in the entire Mediterranean.
But because it is so famous, visiting in June can quickly turn into a headache if you show up at the wrong time. By 11:00 AM, the massive cruise boats arrive, the main beach area gets packed, and the midday sun leaves you completely exposed with almost zero natural shade on the island. If you want to actually enjoy the water instead of fighting through a sea of selfie sticks, you just need a better game plan.
The Early Bird Cruise
The absolute best way to experience the Blue Lagoon is to get there before the big tour boats from Sliema arrive. Look for smaller boat charters or eco-tours that depart early in the morning. If you can step onto the island by 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM, you will get about two blissful hours of complete peace, quiet waters, and empty shorelines.
The Crystal Lagoon Alternative
When the clock strikes 11:30 AM and the main lagoon gets too busy, walk right past the crowds and head over to the neighboring Crystal Lagoon. It is a slightly deeper, enclosed bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs and sea caves. It is spectacular for snorkeling, much less crowded, and offers a bit more breathing room.
The Northern Launchpad Advantage
The biggest mistake tourists make is booking a boat that leaves all the way from the south or the main harbour areas, which means spending hours stuck on a boat just to get there.
When you base yourself in the north of the island, you completely skip that transit time. Staying at Bella Vista places you just minutes away from the Bugibba Jetty and a short bus ride from the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal. You can easily hop on an early morning boat, spend a gorgeous few hours swimming in the clearest water in Europe, and be back at the hotel by the afternoon, just in time to escape the scorching midday heat and relax by our indoor pool.
